Difference Between French and American Education

A student should carefully choose where to study due to the distinctions between the United States and France. In the United States and France, the enrollment process is significantly different. Though admission to American universities can be difficult, students who have completed a bachelor’s (secondary education certificate) are eligible to register in a public university in France. It implies that first-year class numbers are numerous, and as a result, learning is more dynamic. The university holds extremely competitive examinations after the first year. Only students that made it through will get a spot in the second-year program. The sport is the culture of college life in the United States. At French institutions, the students union, or bureau des étudiants, offers sports and social events, but it does not have the same significance or focus.

From their first year at university, students in France must concentrate on the vital topic of study. Students should understand what they want to get out of their degree. Or which future employment they desire to go after from the start of their learning. The structure of institutes is one of the fundamental similarities between studies in the United States and France.

France has an exclusive group of institutes called the grandes écoles, similar to the Ivy League in America and Oxbridge in the United Kingdom. These are recognized in the French public eye and have extraordinarily stringent admissions requirements.

You must have a medium step of French to enroll in a French-taught degree program. Depending on the course you want to study, many institutions will ask for an intermediate or advanced credential in the diplôme d’études en langue française (DELF). There are many chances to learn French along with your degree if you wish to study in English but want to increase your French proficiency.

You should carefully select your destination as a non-French speaker. Paris and other major cities have a lot of English speakers. You may find that you need to buckle up on your French to connect with the inhabitants of smaller villages.

    Fees for International Students

Tuition rates in France are among the cheapest, with annual expenses for domestic and international students averaging under $100 per year. Students from outside the EU/EEA, however, will pay more starting in September 2019.

If you are a permanent resident or a citizen of a country in the EEA (European Economic Area) or Switzerland, you may study in France for free.

Students who are neither Swiss nor European Economic Area citizens must pay a tuition fee. The government has set the tuition fees for 2019 at:

    • €2770 a year for Bachelor’s program.
    • €3770 a year for Master’s programs
    • €380 per year for Doctorate (Ph.D.) programs.

These costs are due in full at the start of each academic year.

Private institutions, which have the freedom to determine their annual prices, charge substantially higher tuition fees, ranging from €3,000 to €20,000 per year. Some of France’s best management schools charge yearly tuition fees of up to €30,000. International students wishing to study in France must demonstrate that they have the financial resources to support themselves in school. Students have €615 per month (€7318 per year) in their accounts.

    Scholarships

With the recent hike in tuition costs, the government has decided to triple the number of scholarships available to international students. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and The French embassy offer scholarships to transnational students in every country. About 25% of these are funded directly by the Ministry. Every year, universities award scholarships to both overseas students and residents. Scholarships might be entirely funded, partly funded, or merely cover the cost of tuition. The Campus web tool can provide further information on these scholarships.

Part-time Work and Making Money in France

In France, many students work part-time or do an internship in addition to their education. Students can work up to 19.5 hours per week during the school year and full-time during the summer. They can formally apply for a 6-month temporary work permit from the French government to help them find jobs after completing their postgraduate studies. However, this clause has lately narrowed and declined several applications.

It is not expensive to be a student in France. With housing costs included, students in bigger cities, excluding Paris, may get by on €850 to €1000 per month. However, be ready to invest at least €1250 to €1400 each month if you wish to study in France as a transnational student!

    Student Accommodation in France

Aside from Paris, most universities provide subsidized student housing, either on campus or nearby. However, there are incredibly few options for student living in Paris. As a result, lodging rates can be high. The Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, a large student residence in the south of Paris, consists of dormitories occupied by students of various nationalities. Because this lodging is only available to students seeking a Master’s degree and there are numerous applicants, admittance is not guaranteed. If you want to search for private housing, note that desirable flats will be in high demand right before the new school year.

    Student Visa

Once you enter a French university, you will need a visa if you are a resident of a country outside the EU. You will ask for a VLS-TS (étudiant) visa, which permits you to live. Also, you can study and work in France for up to 964 hours yearly ( 20 hours per week).

The visa costs €99, but you must confirm it for an additional €60 within three months of arrival. On the other hand, the visa permits you to travel across the Schengen area like, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, and Spain!
